Detroit Tigers top prospect Jackson Jobe’s journey to the major leagues is deeply rooted in family support.
A Family Steeped In Sports
Before Jackson Jobe dreamed of pitching in the Major Leagues, he was walking the fairways of Augusta National.
At just shy of four years old, Jackson and his older sister Brittan donned the iconic white jumpsuits, serving as caddies for their father, Brandt Jobe, during the Masters’ par-3 tournament.
“Jackson was barely big enough,” Brandt recalled. “I was holding his hand and carrying the clubs, and he was dragging my putter along.”
This early exposure to professional sports set the stage for Jackson’s future, though at the time, he couldn’t fully appreciate the significance.
“I can’t believe I didn’t understand how cool that was,” Jackson reflected. “I would do anything to go watch my dad playing the Masters at this age now, that’d be an unreal experience.”
Balancing Family And Career
Brandt and Jennifer Jobe made conscious efforts to balance Brandt’s golf career with family life.
They moved from Denver to Dallas to allow for quick trips home between tournaments.
This arrangement allowed Brandt to squeeze in family dinners and school pickups between his professional commitments.
“It takes so much time and so much commitment to play sports at such a high level that it becomes very selfish,” Brandt explained.
“And then when you have a family, that makes it even more difficult because you want to spend your time being a father to your kids. So there’s a tough balance in there. And I hope I got it right.”
From Golf Prodigy To Baseball Star
As Jackson grew older, his interests expanded beyond golf.
At age 10, he boldly declared his professional sports ambitions to his father:
“I remember telling him that I wanted to be professional baseball player,” Jackson recalled. “And if that doesn’t work out, professional basketball player. If that doesn’t work out, being in the NFL. And then if all those don’t work out, then I’ll be a golfer.”
While Brandt initially laughed off these lofty goals, he soon noticed Jackson’s growing competitiveness.
The young athlete’s passion for baseball intensified during his junior year of high school, leading to impressive performances and eventually catching the eye of MLB scouts.
Family Support In Professional Baseball
Jackson’s transition to professional baseball has been marked by unwavering family support.
When he faced challenges in his early career, including a 4.96 ERA in his first 15 starts for Single-A Lakeland, his father’s advice to “keep working” resonated deeply.
Most recently, Jackson’s MLB debut for the Detroit Tigers was a family affair.
Twenty-three family members and friends, including his parents and girlfriend, were in attendance at Comerica Park to witness his first major league appearance.
“It was crazy,” Jackson said of his debut. “I don’t think it’s fully hit me yet. It’d be tough to draw it up any better than that with this crowd and the position this team is in. That was really special.”
